SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University women's basketball team compiled a season-high 21 assists and hit 17-of-20 free-throw attempts in the second half to close out the regular season with a convincing 74-60 Senior Day victory over Cheyney on Saturday afternoon from Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (12-15, 6-8 PSAC East) was eliminated from postseason contention but put forth a stellar team effort in Saturday's finale, shooting 44 percent from the field and out-rebounding the Wolves by a 47-33 margin.
Junior forward
Lauren Beckley finished with 32 points and 13 rebounds for her 11th double-double in divisional play and 18th of the season, including 10 such performances over the final 11 games of the year. She also had four assists, four steals and two blocks while hitting 10-of-11 from the free-throw line.
Playing in her final game with the women's basketball team, senior guard
Elise Mercer finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and three assists. An exercise science major, Mercer totaled more than 600 points in 103 career games with the Lady Raiders and joined Beckley as the only two players to start in every game for Shippensburg this season.
Cheyney (12-12, 7-7 PSAC East), the No. 4 seed from the Eastern Division for the upcoming PSAC Women's Basketball Tournament, led by six points with four minutes to play in the opening half before Shippensburg closed with a 9-0 run to hold a 31-28 lead at intermission.
The contest stayed a one-possession game for the first 10 minutes of the second half and was tied for the 10th time in the game with 11:18 remaining in regulation, but the Lady Raiders improved their offensive execution and recorded an 18-6 run to take a double-digit lead with 5:14 to play.
All 12 of Shippensburg's second-half baskets featured assists, as the improved passing helped the Lady Raiders commit just three turnovers over the decisive nine-minute run. Shippensburg also sunk seven free throws in the final two minutes to help clinch the victory.

Kasey Gardner compiled 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists in the victory while freshman point guard
Erin Varley delivered 29 outstanding minutes off the bench and contributed eight points, seven assists and five rebounds.
