SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University men's basketball team led by just one point with nine minutes to play on Tuesday night from Heiges Field House but embarked upon a 16-4 run over the next five minutes of play to earn a convincing 74-57 victory over WVIAC regional rival Shepherd.
Shippensburg (6-1) received strong performances from redshirt freshman
Lamar Jackson and senior
Brian Oleksiak while the Red Raiders limited the visitors to just 19 rebounds, the lowest total by an opponent under ninth-year head coach
Dave Springer and the fewest overall by an SU opponent in at least 12 seasons.
Jackson was 5-of-6 from the field in the first half, including 3-of-3 from three-point range, while the Red Raiders hit six of their seven three-pointers in the opening frame en route to a 34-29 halftime lead. SU shot 58 percent from the field during the opening 20 minutes of play and 54 percent for the game.
Perhaps the biggest key to the game was Shippensburg's free-throw shooting in the second half. After not getting to the line at all in the first half, the Red Raiders hit 15-of-17 from the free-throw line in the second half. Jackson and senior forward
Daziah Miller each converted all four of their attempts, while the team converted all eight of its attempts over the final five minutes of the contest.
The offensive touch was possessed on Tuesday night by Jackson, who finished with a career-high 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting. He also added three rebounds, three assists and two steals while committing just three turnovers from the point guard position in 30 minutes of action.
Oleksiak had his strongest offensive game as a Red Raider with a career-high 14 points (4-of-7 shooting) to complement seven rebounds and a game-high five assists. He was 5-of-6 from the free-throw line and played a team-high 35 minutes. Miller added 10 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Shippensburg is now 6-0 this season when holding opponents under 60 points. Additionally, Tuesday's game marked the fourth time in seven contests this year that every Red Raider participant compiled at least 10 minutes and two points in the game.
The Red Raiders will travel to Mercyhurst College this weekend to compete in the Mercyhurst Invitational. Shippensburg will face Washington Adventist (formerly Columbia Union) at 6 p.m. on Saturday before facing Virginia Union at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
