CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Senior forward
Lauren Beckley moved into third place on Shippensburg University's all-time scoring list on Monday afternoon from Eddie King Gymnasium but the Lady Raiders could not mount a second-half comeback, dropping a 91-69 decision to the University of Charleston.
Shippensburg (5-6) was led offensively by Beckley, who finished the game with 36 points on 13-of-20 shooting from the field. Beckley moved past Tracy Spencer in the SU record books on Monday and needs just 10 points to become the ninth player in PSAC history to reach 2,000 career points. She hit five three-pointers in the game and also added seven rebounds and two blocks.
Charleston (5-4), the reigning WVIAC champions, raced out to a 48-37 lead at the intermission by connecting on 20-of-36 from the field (56 percent), including 6-of-12 from behind the three-point line. Beckley kept the Lady Raiders close, as it took seven attempts before she missed her first shot of the game. Through the first nine minutes of play, Beckley had scored 18 of the team's first 22 points. She finished the opening period with 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting.
With nine minutes remaining in the first half, the score was tied at 23-23. The Golden Eagles began a scoring run and built their double-digit halftime lead on the strength of three players scoring in double figures and nine assists contributed by junior point guard Ali Tobias.
Freshman guard
Kerry Conroy had a strong game for the Lady Raiders, totaling nine points and nine rebounds in 33 minutes of action. Junior forward
Kasey Gardner added six points and six rebounds.
The Lady Raiders will continue their West Virginia trip tomorrow with a 4 p.m. contest from West Virginia State. The game was originally scheduled for 7 p.m. but on Monday the time was adjusted.
