CALIFORNIA, Pa. - An early run proved to be too much for the Shippensburg University women's basketball team on Friday night from Hamer Hall as the No. 10-ranked California (Pa.) Vulcans earned a 101-58 victory over the Lady Raiders in PSAC crossover competition.
Shippensburg (5-3) fell victim to costly turnovers, committing 20 in the first half that led to 31 Vulcan points including 16 on the fast-break. The Lady Raiders improved their effort in the second half with just four turnovers over the course of the final 20 minutes but the Vulcans had already built an insurmountable lead.
Junior
Kasey Gardner led the Lady Raiders with 21 points while hustling for five steals and three assists in 35 minutes of action. Senior forward
Lauren Beckley had a strong second half from the field and finished with 15 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
Senior guard
Sheila Wasser started the second half and had a sensational effort, posting 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting in 17 minutes on the court. She ran the point for most of the half and did not commit a turnover in that span.
Overall, Shippensburg converted 15-of-19 free-throw attempts in the contest. In the second half, the Lady Raiders shot 47 percent from the field, converting 14-of-30 field-goal attempts.
Shippensburg will return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 19 with a road match against West Virginia Wesleyan.
