SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University field hockey team put forth another strong defensive effort on Monday afternoon from Robb Sports Complex as the Lady Raiders recorded their ninth shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory over No. 5 Kutztown.
Shippensburg (13-1) opened the scoring at 9:50 with a blistering shot off the stick of talented freshman defender
Ashley Taylor, whose second goal of the campaign proved to be the game-winner. Less than three minutes later, sophomore
Kristina Taylor deflected home an entry feed from senior
Mariah Wooters for her 15th goal of the season.
Senior
Amanda Houser was staunch once again, making seven saves to bring her season shutout total to seven. Houser was strong on a scrum in the 54th minute, making two stops as Kutztown got several whacks inside the circle. She was also one the leaders for the defensive unit that helped turn aside 13 penalty corners for the Golden Bears.
Kutztown (7-6) received strong play from goaltender Emily Falko, who matched Houser by making seven saves. With Monday's victory, Shippensburg earns the sweep in the season series after splitting two meetings last season.
Shippensburg will return to action on Wednesday at 4 p.m. against PSAC Western Division opponent Mercyhurst. The Lady Raiders recorded a 2-1 road victory back on Labor Day against the Lakers.
