Saturday Road Trip to Cheyney Ends In 75-58 PSAC Eastern Division Loss to Lady Wolves

CHEYNEY, Pa. - The Shippensburg women's basketball team hit the road on Saturday afternoon for a PSAC Eastern Division contest from Cope Hall but could not get the gears going offensively, as home-standing Cheyney shot 44 percent from the field and forced 27 turnovers in a 75-58 victory over Shippensburg that snapped a nine-game winning streak against the Wolves.

Shippensburg (10-9, 4-2 PSAC East) hit 11 three-pointers in the contest and shot 40 percent from behind the arc but hit just five other field goals, shooting 29 percent overall in the game. The Lady Raiders continued their excellent free-throw shooting, finishing 15-of-17 (88 percent) from the charity stripe.

Junior forward Lauren Beckley recorded her 11th double-double in 19 games this season with 22 points and 11 rebounds, hitting five three-pointers and draining all seven of her free-throw attempts.

With her performance, Beckley moved into seventh place on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,566 points, surpassing Melissa Swartz (1993-97). She is just 17 points behind current Lady Raider assistant coach Jen Scaffidi (2001-05) for sixth place. 

Freshman guard Erin Varley contributed nine points, all in the first half on three three-pointers, while sophomore forward Kasey Gardner had eight points, three assists and two steals. Junior guard Michelle Metz finished with eight points for the Lady Raiders.

Cheyney (9-6, 4-2 PSAC East) was led offensively by Lutfiyya Muhammad, who totaled a game-high 28 points along with four steals, four rebounds and two assists. Angel Stephens finished with 15 points and nine rebounds. The Wolves had 19 steals and converted 20-of-28 free-throw attempts.

Shippensburg will return to action on Wednesday evening with a home game against West Chester. The contest will tip from Heiges Field House at 6 p.m.
