BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg women's basketball team reeled off a 16-1 run over a five-minute stretch of the second half on Thursday night that helped the Lady Raiders erase a three-point deficit and move into a three-way tie atop the PSAC Eastern Division with a 57-50 victory over the Bloomsburg Huskies from Nelson Field House.
Shippensburg (10-8, 4-1 PSAC East) earned its sixth consecutive victory over the Huskies but not without much trepidation in the second half. The Lady Raiders trailed by three points early in the second half after closing the opening 20 minutes with some lackadaisical play but came on strong by taking over the territorial edge at the 16:00 mark.
The run allowed Shippensburg to open up a 17-point lead after holding the Huskies to nine points over the first 11 minutes of the second half.
Junior forward
Lauren Beckley posted her 10th double-double of the season and 38th of her career with 22 points and 13 rebounds along with two steals and a block. She was also 4-of-5 from the three-point line.
Her offensive complement on Thursday evening was junior guard
Michelle Metz, who contributed 16 points in 27 minutes off the bench while hitting all six of her free-throw attempts.
Shippensburg officially sealed the victory in the final 20 seconds off a play at the free-throw line. After Beckley missed her second free-throw attempt, sophomore
Kasey Gardner got open and grabbed the offensive rebound and dished it back to Beckley for the open lay-up, giving the Lady Raiders its seven-point margin of victory.
Bloomsburg (8-10, 0-5 PSAC East) was led offensively by freshman sensation Kelsey Gallagher. The five-time PSAC Eastern Division Freshman of the Week finished with 18 points, three assists and three steals. Lauren Healy was the other Husky in double figures with 14 points.
Shippensburg returns to the court on Saturday for a PSAC Eastern Division contest at Cheyney from Cope Hall. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
