SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Freshman
Tom Wiechelt and red-shirt junior
Nate Nauroth earned crucial victories on Wednesday night from Heiges Field House to help the Shippensburg wrestling team earn its sixth consecutive victory over Millersville, 27-12.
Shippensburg (5-0-1) remained unbeaten in dual meets this season but fell behind after losing the first two matches of the evening. Trailing 6-0, Wiechelt was aggressive from the outset at 141 and helped establish some momentum for his team with a victory by fall in 2:22 over Millersville's Sean Andel that tied the score at 6-6.
Nauroth followed Wiechelt on the mat with a battle of two former high school state runner-ups against Millersville's Mike Greck. The Marauder veteran earned the first takedown of the match in the first period but Nauroth fought hard and capped off his comeback with a near fall late in the match that gave him a 5-2 victory.
The Raiders would fall behind again, 12-9, following the match at 165 pounds. In the final two contested matches of the evening, red-shirt sophomore
Chris Barrick and red-shirt junior
Jon Hade scratched and clawed their way to tight decisions before Millersville forfeited the final two matches of the night.
At 174, Barrick engaged in a defensive struggle with Shane Smith, as a Marauder escape was the only scoring in the first two periods. After Barrick had an escape at the start of the third period, he made an excellent move against Smith to earn a two-point takedown and earn a 3-1 victory. Barrick improved to 14-1 this season and earned his second victory over Smith this season.
Hade followed Barrick at 184 and allowed an early takedown but countered with one of his own to take a 3-2 lead after the first period. He recorded another takedown in the second period and a reversal in the third period to earn an 8-4 decision over Jason Foor.
Shippensburg will return to action on Saturday with four dual meets from the East Coast Duals, hosted by St. Andrew's Presbyterian College in North Carolina. The Raiders will take on UNC-Pembroke and No. 2 Newberry as well as Mercyhurst (ranked No. 3 in the East region) and Limestone.
