SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Senior forward Kim Davies scored two goals to lead the Shippensburg field hockey team to a 3-2 upset victory over Bloomsburg in a PSAC crossover contest on Saturday afternoon at Robb Sports Complex. Bloomsburg, the No. 1-ranked team in Division II, lost for the first time since Oct. 27, 2007 in the PSAC Championship game.
Shippensburg (7-1) entered the game knowing that Bloomsburg had outscored its opponents by an impressive 62-3 margin, but remained undaunted and matched the output of the previous eight Husky opponents in one sunny afternoon.
Bloomsburg (8-1) struck first for a 1-0 advantage. Talented forward Jamie Vanartsdalen caged her 15th goal of the season after gaining a breakaway to give the Huskies the initial lead.
The Lady Raiders held steady and answered with a goal by junior Mariah Wooters to tie the game at 1-1 mid-way through the first half. Davies' first goal of the game and ninth of the season came at the 13:18 mark and gave Shippensburg a 2-1 halftime lead.
Davies would rip her 10th goal of the season just three minutes into the second half to give Shippensburg a sturdy 3-1 lead.
As expected, however, Bloomsburg continued to apply the pressure and scored on a late goal from Breanne Tobin to cut the Shippensburg lead to 3-2. With no time remaining, Bloomsburg was awarded a penalty corner opportunity but Shippensburg was able to neutralize the threat and hold on for the win.
The Shippensburg defense held unbeaten Bloomsburg to just two shots over the entire second half on the strength of stifling coverage. Junior goalkeeper Amanda Houser recorded nine saves on the afternoon.
The win was the fourth straight for the Lady Raiders, who remain unbeaten at Robb Sports Complex this season with a 3-0 record. Shippensburg will travel to play Slippery Rock (2-6) at 2 p.m this Tuesday.
