Box Score

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -
Kutztown scored the final seven runs of the game, four of which were accounted for by Corey Buletza who finished 5-for-5 with three runs, two RBIs and two stolen bases to lead the Golden Bears to an 8-1 victory over Shippensburg Wednesday afternoon in a PSAC crossover game at North Campus Field.

The loss was the 12th-straight for the Red Raiders (24-15) against Kutztown and the fourth consecutive on the road.

The last victory for Shippensburg against the Golden Bears was back on Apr. 29, 2004 in the PSAC Baseball Championship, 4-3 in 11 innings. The last win for the team at North Campus Field was March 30 of that same year, 9-6.

Six Golden Bears (15-14) combined for all 16 of the team's hits on Tuesday with five of them totaling two or more. In addition to Buletza, Mike Kacelowicz and Jared Frey totaled three hits each.

Kutztown took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Buletza scored on a double down the left field line by Kacelowicz before the Red Raiders tied the game in the third when junior Kyle Rhoades scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Rick Shumway.

However, that unearned run was the only one Shippensburg could muster against Golden Bear starter Ryan Cassidy who allowed just six hits over five innings while striking out five in picking up his first victory of the season.

Justin Jachowicz and Mike Bucklin combined to limit the Red Raiders to just two hits over the final four innings, retiring 12 of the 14 batters they faced.

Meanwhile, the Kutztown offense totaled six runs and 15 against Shippensburg junior Thomas Ashman and freshman Kody Kibler who combined to throw the first 6.2 innings. Ashman suffered his second loss in as many starts after allowing 11 hits, three runs and three walks over five innings.

After junior Jason Kelly entered the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, striking out Frey who was the only batter he faced, senior Kyle Warner pitched the eighth, surrendering the final two runs, only one of which was earned.

Senior Eric Dezell finished 2-for-3 with a walk to lead the Red Raiders offensively while junior Tyler Redick and Rhoades also added two hits. Shumway finished 1-for-3 with one RBI as he extended his hitting streak to eight games, one behind Redick's nine-game streak.

It was also the 18th multi-hit game of the season for Redick, four behind senior Justin Garber who leads the team with 22.

After back-to-back non-conference losses, Shippensburg returns to PSAC Western Division play on Friday with a doubleheader against Indiana (Pa.) at Fairchild Field beginning at Noon. Both teams are currently tied for first place in the division with 6-2 conference records.
