SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - For the second-straight game and for the seventh time in 13 losses this season, the Shippensburg University women's lacrosse team was on the losing end of a game decided by five goals or less as Bloomsburg scored three of the game's final four goals en route to a 13-10 victory Saturday at Robb Sports Complex on Senior Day.
The loss was the fifth for the Lady Raiders (4-13, 4-10 PSAC) in seven home games this season and ended the careers of seniors
Kelly Erisman,
Katie Irwin,
Brita Paul,
Allie Rutland,
Kelly Smith and Kristen Crutchfield.
Since their arrival at Shippensburg in 2005, these six individuals were instrumental in the team's 21 victories which included a seven-game turnaround from their freshman to sophomore season. They also helped the Lady Raiders to two PSAC Women's Lacrosse Championship appearances in the last three seasons.
Meanwhile, the victory, combined with East Stroudsburg's 25-4 loss at No. 4 West Chester, secured the No. 3-seed in next week's conference tournament for Bloomsburg (9-8, 9-5 PSAC).
After falling behind 6-3 at halftime, Shippensburg scored the first three goals of the second half on tallies from Irwin, sophomore
Liz DiNunno and freshman
Karen Schnurr to tie the game at 6-6 with just over 20 minutes remaining in the game.
In 17 games this season, the Lady Raiders allowed 108 first half goals and trailed at the half in all but 12 of them. With the exception of the team's four wins, the only game Shippensburg did not trail at the half in was against then No. 7 Lock Haven at home on April 2 in which the game was tied at 4-4.
With the game tied at 6-6 on Saturday, the Huskies' Cali Toms added to her team-leading goal total with her 42nd and 43rd of the season that were the first of four consecutive goals for Bloomsburg to give the team a 10-6 advantage with 12:47 to play.
Not to be outdone, Shippensburg scored the game's next three-straight, the last coming on a free position by freshman
Stephanie Sleboda, to pull within one, 10-9 with 4:32 to play.
However, as has been the Lady Raiders' nemesis all season, the Huskies answered quickly to protect its lead as Kim Springman scored her third of the game just 36 seconds after Sleboda to push the lead back to two.
Irwin scored with 1:51 left, but Bloomsburg won the draw and controlled the clock until Toms scored her fourth of game with just 19 seconds left to seal the victory for the Huskies before Kelsey Quigley added a meaningless goal with three seconds remaining.
In addition to its 29 turnovers, Shippensburg was limited by the strong play of Bloomsburg's Bridget Maenner in goal who tied a season-high with 23 saves. She also stopped 23 shots in a 12-11 victory at Millersville back on March 25.
Sophomore
Brooke Miller had seven saves for the Lady Raiders.
Paul and Sleboda each finished with three points for Shippensburg as Paul added one goal and two assists while Sleboda totaled two goals and one assist. Irwin and DiNunno had two goals apiece while sophomore
Gayle Kuntzmann finished with 11 ground balls and seven caused turnovers.
Paul finished her career with 97 points on 56 goals and 41 assists while Irwin totaled 72 points on 52 goals and 20 assists. Also, Smith had 62 points in her career, including 45 goals.
