Box Score

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -
Andy May went 3-for-4 with one RBI while Chad Lightcap went 1-for-3 with two RBIs to lead Kutztown to its 13th-straight victory over Shippensburg in a PSAC crossover matchup Tuesday afternoon at Fairchild Field, 4-2.

It was also the fourth consecutive loss for the Red Raiders (29-21) against the Golden Bears at home. Shippensburg's last win against Kutztown at home came back on Apr. 14, 2004, 11-2.

Meanwhile, the win was just the fifth in the last 11 games for the Golden Bears (22-20) who lost to Division III Albright on Monday at First Energy Field, 5-4. A year after setting a school record for wins with 49, Kutztown is currently tied with Mansfield for the third and final playoff spot from the Eastern Division in next week's PSAC Baseball Championship.

Shippensburg freshman Kody Kibler, who made just his second career start on Tuesday, retired eight of the first nine batters he faced and held the Golden Bears scoreless until the top of the third.

After Kibler retired the first two batters of the inning, Corey Buletza doubled down the left field line before Mike Kacelowicz drew a walk on a wild pitch, moving Buletza to third. Kacelowicz then stole second uncontested to put two runners in scoring position before Lightcap scored both with a two-run double to left center.

The Red Raiders would get one run back in the bottom of the third when freshman Steve McCardell scored on a wild pitch that also put senior Justin Garber and junior Tyler Redick in scoring position with two outs. However, Steve Craig got sophomore Rick Shumway to fly out to end the inning.

After entering the game in the fourth, Shippensburg freshman Matt Emerich retired three of the batters he faced before the Red Raiders tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning when McCardell reached on a fielding error by the third baseman that allowed sophomore Kevin Miller to score, unearned.

McCardell was involved in both of Shippensburg's runs on the day and finished the game 1-for-4 with a run and 12 putouts at first base.

Kutztown scored the game-winning run in the sixth when May hit an RBI-single to left scoring James Quigley and added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI-single by Kacelowicz.

In two starts this season, the last coming at West Chester on April 15, Kibler has allowed just five hits and two earned runs in seven innings while striking out four.

For Emerich, Tuesday marked his eighth appearance of the season, but just his second at home. In those two games at Fairchild Field, he has allowed only four hits and one earned run over six innings. However, he was saddled with the loss after allowing the game-winning hit to May in the sixth, dropping his record to 0-3 despite scattering three hits and surrendering just one run.

Mike Bucklin, who replaced Craig in the fourth, picked up his first win of the season, pitching five innings of scoreless relief while allowing just three hits and striking out three. Justin Jachowicz earned his first save of the season after retiring three of the four Red Raiders he faced in the ninth.

Sophomore Ashton Taughinbaugh was one of five Shippensburg players to combine for six hits and the only one with two as he went 2-for-4. Sophomore Kevin Scholly went 1-for-1 after a pinch-hit single in the seventh.

The Red Raiders travel to Lock Haven on Friday to begin a four-game PSAC Western Division series with the Bald Eagles before wrapping up the regular season on Saturday with a doubleheader at Fairchild Field on Senior Day.
