Box Score

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -
Shippensburg University women's lacrosse sophomore Gayle Kuntzmann and freshman Rachel Murray scored a career-high three goals each, but Millersville freshman Courtney Haggerty made 23 saves as the Marauders held off a late rally en route to a 12-9 victory Thursday at Robb Sports Complex.

The loss was the fifth-straight for the Lady Raiders (2-8, 2-6 PSAC), the most for the team since 2005 when it finished 1-14. That year, Shippensburg lost the final eight games of the season before dropping the first three of 2006.

For Millersville (6-3, 5-3 PSAC), the team won its fourth-straight and continued its race for a spot in the PSAC Women's Lacrosse Championship. Entering Thursday's game, the Marauders were just a half-game behind East Stroudsburg and Bloomsburg for the last two playoff spots.

The Lady Raiders won every key statistical category on Thursday afternoon with the exception of the totals on the scoreboard. They held a 39-22 advantage in shots and a 15-7 margin in draw controls as well as a 27-24 edge in ground balls.

Shippensburg even committed 11 fewer turnovers and 15 less fouls while converting on free position shot attempts. However, Haggerty's career-high 23 saves proved to be the difference as she was there to turn away the Lady Raiders' countless opportunities.

Shippensburg fell behind 6-0 in the game's first 14-plus minutes and trailed 8-2 at halftime as eight different Millersville players accounted for all eight goals. Elizabeth Weekley led the Marauders' first half charge, totaling three points on one goal and two assists.

Millersville extended its lead to as many as eight, 12-4 with 15:07 remaining in the game before the Lady Raiders attempted a comeback by scoring the final six goals of the game, four of which came from Kuntzmann and Murray.

A defenseman, Kunztmann's three goals doubled her offensive output as she entered the game with three in nine previous games this season. Meanwhile, Murray, playing in just her fifth game, tripled her output after she had scored just one goal prior to Thursday.

Sophomore Liz DiNunno added two assists and now has five on the year, just two shy of senior Katie Irwin who leads the team with seven. DiNunno also increased her point total to 14, tying her with sophomore Sandy Sigel for the third-most on the team.

In goal, sophomore Brooke Miller stopped four shots.

Shippensburg will travel to Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday to take on the Crimson Hawks at Miller Stadium beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Lady Raiders handed IUP a 12-6 loss at home back on March 22 for one of its two wins this season.
