SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Playing its first home game of the 2008 season and looking for its first win, the Shippensburg University women's lacrosse team used a dominating performance in which the Lady Raiders held a 41-12 edge in shots and forced 28 turnovers en route to a 12-6 victory over Indiana (Pa.) Saturday at Robb Sports Complex.
Saturday's game was a rematch from last season where Shippensburg (1-3, 1-1 PSAC) battled with the Crimson Hawks for the fourth and final spot in the 2007 PSAC Women's Lacrosse Championship until the final day of the regular-season. The two teams split their two meetings a year ago with each team winning on its home field.
The difference in the game came in the first half where Shippensburg (1-3, 1-1 PSAC) built a 7-2 halftime lead after holding the Crimson Hawks to just three shots, none of which were on goal. The Lady Raiders outshot IUP 24-3, held a 16-9 edge in ground balls and a 7-3 advantage in ground balls.
Shippensburg scored the first three goals of the game, two of which came from sophomore
Sandy Sigel.
Lauren Abbott, the leading scorer for IUP (1-2, 0-2 PSAC), scored at 14:07 to stop the run, but the Lady Raiders responded just 14 seconds later when sophomore
Stephanie Sleboda netted her first goal of the season at 13:53.
Sleboda would answer with her second goal just 32 seconds after the Crimson Hawks' scored their second goal of the game at 4:52.
After a dominant first half by Shippensburg, the two teams were more even in the second with the Lady Raiders holding just a one-goal edge. IUP managed nine shots in the second half, three times its first half total, while scoring two of their four goals on free position attempts.
Senior
Katie Irwin led Shippensburg offensively with two goals and one assist while sophomore
Liz DiNunno added two goals. Irwin leads the team with eight goals this season, just ahead of DiNunno who now has seven.

Brita Paul increased her team-leading point total to 12 as she scored two goals.
In goal, sophomore
Brooke Miller earned her first victory as a Lady Raider, totaling four saves. For IUP, Katie Lee stopped 20 shots and through three games this season, has amassed 67 saves.
Shippensburg will look for its second-straight win on the road at Slippery Rock on Tuesday. Game time is at 4:00 p.m.
