Game 2

MANSFIELD, Pa. - Shippensburg University baseball junior Thomas Ashman won his second game in three starts this season while freshman Kris Kullman went 3-for-3 with a double, home run and four RBIs to lead the Red Raiders to an 11-5 victory in game two of a doubleheader at Mansfield on Saturday at Shaute Field. The Mountaineers won game one, 6-3.

Eight of the nine batters for Shippensburg (13-10) had at least one hit in the second game, including Kullman and junior Tyler Redick who was 3-for-5 with two RBIs.

However, the story in game two was the pitching of Ashman who held Mansfield scoreless through innings while scattering eight hits and striking out three. He did not walk any of the 28 batters he face and of the 20 batters he retired, 11 came via ground out.

Meanwhile, Ashman received plenty of run support, highlighted by a five-run fifth and a four-run seventh.

After the Mountaineers (14-7) scored two runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 2-2, the Red Raiders scored five in the top of the fifth, four of which came on a grand slam by Kullman, his first career home run, with two outs.

The next batter, junior Tim Freshour, followed with his first home run as a Red Raider, a solo shot that have Shippensburg a 7-2 lead.

Mansfield would get one run back in the bottom of the fifth before the Red Raiders added four more in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run single by Redick. Junior Kyle Rhoades also drew a bases loaded walk for an RBI while freshman Kevin Miller drove in the team's final run with an RBI-single to center that scored Rhoades.

Rhoades, Miller and Freshour each had two hits for Shippensburg.

In game one, all nine runs were scored in the first three innings with the Mountaineers plating three each in the second and third after the Red Raiders took a 3-0 lead.

Senior Justin Garber had a hand in two of Shippensburg's three runs in the game, scoring on a Rhoades RBI-single in the first before scoring junior Kasey Kuhns with an RBI-single to center in the second. He finished the game 3-for-4.

Of the three runs allowed by Mansfield starter Justin Garcia, only one was earned.

Offensively, four of the Mountaineers's six runs came on RBI singles while the other two came on sacrifice fly and a wild pitch.

On the mound, junior Andrew Burke suffered his first loss in his last four starts as he surrendered six runs on nine hits, eight of which came in the first three innings. After a leadoff double by Abram Yeakel in the fourth, Burke retired six of the final seven batters he faced before being replaced by junior Jason Kelly in the seventh.

Shippensburg will play the first of seven games in seven days on Monday when it travels to Bloomsburg for a rematch with the Huskies beginning at 1:00 p.m., in a doubleheader rescheduled from March 16.
