Lady Raider Lacrosse Drops PSAC Opener at Millersville, 16-9

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Elizabeth Weekley scored five goals, three of which came in the second half, as Millersville won its second game in as many this season, scoring six of the final nine goals en route to handing Shippensburg a 16-9 loss on Wednesday in the PSAC opener for both teams.

The Marauders (2-0, 1-0 PSAC), who were picked to finish sixth in the PSAC preseason poll, two spots behind the Lady Raiders, held a 37-24 edge in shots, including a 20-7 margin in the first half. Millersville had 10 players score at least one point.

Junior Liz DiNunno led Shippensburg (0-3, 0-1 PSAC) with a career-high four points which also included a career-high three goals. Seniors Katie Irwin and Brita Paul had two goals each.

Paul opened the scoring for the Lady Raiders just 2:32 into the contest when she netted her fourth goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Sandy Sigel.

However, Millersville would score the next three-straight, including two in a span of 1:58, to take a 3-1 lead with 19:05 remaining.

Each team would alternate goals over the next 15 minutes as the Marauders maintained a one goal lead, 6-5, before scoring the final two tallies of the half, the last of which came from Kelsey Schmoltze with just seven seconds remaining, to take an 8-5 halftime lead.

Millersville opened the second half with back-to-back goals while holding the Lady Raiders scoreless for the first 10:44 to increase its lead to 10-5 before Irwin netted her second of the game and team-leading sixth of the season at 19:16.

Undaunted, the Marauders responded by scoring seven of the game's next eight goals, two of which came from Weekley, to put the game away as they upped their margin to nine, 16-7 with 6:56.

Sigel finished the game with one goal and one assist while sophomore Brooke Miller made eight saves.

Shippensburg returns to action on Saturday when its makes its 2008 home debut, hosting Indiana (Pa.) at Robb Sports Complex beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Crimson Hawks are 1-1 this season after losing their conference opener at home to No. 6-ranked Lock Haven, 17-5.
