ANDERSON, S.C. - For the second-straight day, Anderson University (S.C.) came from behind to take a win away from the Shippensburg baseball team, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh en route to a 5-2 victory in the final game of a three-game series Sunday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium.
Junior Kyle Rhoades went 3-for-4 to lead the Red Raiders (1-6) offensively while senior Justin Garber was 2-for-4.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of fourth, Shippensburg freshman #Kevin Miller# led off the inning with a triple before junior Kasey Kuhns followed with an RBI-single to tie the game at 1-1.
The Red Raiders added an unearned run in the top of the fifth before the Trojans (5-13) scored two runs on three hits in the seventh to take a 3-2 lead.
Anderson added two insurance runs in the eighth on a double down the right field line by Trent Still scored pinch-runner Nick Easterlin. Josh Grubbs pinch ran for Still and scored on Derek Hipp's squeeze bunt to increase the Trojan lead to three.
Patrick West scored the first run of the game in the third inning when he scored on an errant pickoff attempt to give Anderson a 1-0 lead.
B.J. Smith led the Trojans offensively, going 3-for-5 with a run while Hipp went 2-for-4 with one RBI. On the mound, Cory Welch earned the victory in relief, throwing two scoreless innings and allowing just one hit.
For Shippensburg, junior Andrew Burke suffered his second loss in as many starts this season, allowing three runs in 6 1/3 innings.
The Red Raiders return to action next weekend with a three-game series at No. 8 Georgia College & State that will mark the seventh game out of 10 this season in which Shippensburg has faced a team ranked in the top-10.
