Women’s Basketball Outscores Philadelphia By 26 Points In Second Half En Route to 81-59 Win

Gardner scores 27 points for SU, including 23 in second half

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. –
The Shippensburg women's basketball team stymied the Lady Rams in the second half by holding them to nine points in the first 10 minutes of the period to erase a four-point halftime deficit and record an 81-59 victory over Philadelphia University on Tuesday night from the Gallagher Center.

Four Shippensburg players totaled double figures in the contest. Sophomore forward Kasey Gardner led all scorers with 27 points, including 23 in the second half. Gardner was one point short of out-scoring Philadelphia in the second half, as the Lady Raiders held a 50-24 margin over the final 20 minutes.

Junior forward Lauren Beckley totaled 14 points and six rebounds, while junior guard Michelle Metz got back in the starting lineup for the second straight game and delivered 12 points. Freshman guard Erin Varley delivered 11 points and five assists, making three 3-pointers.

Shippensburg (4-0) struggled early in the first half, trailing 11-0 after the first three minutes. The team fought back with solid defense and efficient free-throw shooting, getting to the line 21 times in the contest and converting 19 attempts. Gardner made all five of her attempts in the second half, while Beckley made all eight of her attempts in the game. 

The Lady Raiders tied the score with 17:38 to play and never trailed for the remainder of the game. Shippensburg went on a 15-3 run and kept extending their lead for the remainder of the contest.

Shippensburg returns to action after the Thanksgiving break with a Wednesday home game against West Virginia Wesleyan on December 3 that begins at 6 p.m.
