SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Lady Raider basketball team re-gained the lead with 6:21 to play on a three-pointer from tournament MVP
Lauren Beckley and closed out its contest with the University of Charleston on a 26-8 run to earn a 76-60 victory on Sunday afternoon from Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (2-0) battled the Golden Eagles throughout the second half in a contest that featured nine lead changes and six ties. The Lady Raiders trailed by as many as six points in the second half but fought back with the shooting of Beckley, who finished with a game-high 30 points and 12 rebounds. She finished the weekend with 58 points and 19 rebounds in two games.
Complementing Beckley was sophomore
Kasey Gardner, who raced out to 22 points and 12 rebounds while draining four three-pointers for her first double-double of the season. Senior
Elise Mercer was named to the All-Tournament Team and finished the weekend with 26 points in two games, including eight on Sunday.
Charleston (1-1) employed a full-court press to start the second half that led to a 13-2 run. The Golden Eagles erased an eight-point halftime deficit and led by three points with 16:34 to play. Veronica Carman finished with 20 points, while Jihan Williams totaled 15 points and 13 rebounds. Both players were selected to the All-Tournament Team.
The Lady Raiders took control of the game on the boards, recording a 55-29 advantage in rebounds. Freshman
Kaitlin Capriccio started and scored two points with three rebounds, while freshman
Jenn Morrow delivered 14 key minutes off the bench and totaled two points with five rebounds.
Freshman guard
Erin Varley scrapped her way to eight rebounds and eight assists, while junior
Michelle Metz scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. Freshman
Lindsay Howard grabbed three rebounds in four minutes of play.
Down the stretch, Shippensburg once again came up big from the free-throw line, making 19 of its 22 attempts in the second-half. Through two games this season, the Lady Raiders have made 53-of-65 from the free-throw line, good enough for 81 percent from the charity stripe.
Shippensburg will travel to the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown on Saturday for a 1 p.m. matchup with the Mountain Cats.
