BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University field hockey team put forth a vigilant effort against the No. 1-ranked Huskies of Bloomsburg on Friday in the semifinals of the 2008 PSAC Field Hockey Championships, but the Lady Raiders could not overcome a two-goal deficit in the second half and dropped a 7-2 decision at Sports Stadium.
The Lady Raiders now await the results of the NCAA Division II Championships Selection Show, which is set for Monday at 5 p.m.
Shippensburg (17-4) tied the score early in the second half when junior
Jamie Doughty ripped in a loose ball off a shot from senior
Natalie Faith. Unfortunately, senior Jamie Vanartsdalen responded less than one minute later with her 34th goal of the season to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead.
Bloomsburg (20-1) extended the lead to 3-1 off a penalty corner, when Chelsea Due fired a shot past Houser off an assist from Ashley Miller. Undaunted, senior
Kim Davies narrowed the Shippensburg deficit to one in the 53rd minute by tipping in a shot from Faith from inside the crease.
It was the 27th goal of the season for Davies, who is three short of the school record set by Ashley Watt '07 that was set in 2005.
The only first-half scoring came early, when Bloomsburg capitalized on an early strike from Vanessa Whitman. She fired in a loose ball from the crease after Houser made a couple of point-blank saves to quell the initial rally.
