Gayle Kuntzmann scored two goals and senior
Beth Long made nine saves to help the Shippensburg women's soccer team score a 3-1 upset on Thursday afternoon over No. 19 West Virginia Wesleyan, a squad ranked No. 2 in the Atlantic region.
Shippensburg (11-7-1) was playing in its final home game of the season but showed no signs of frustration after its elimination on Tuesday from postseason competition. The Lady Raiders struck first in the ninth minute when sophomore
Alison Dowdrick netted her fifth goal of the season to give the Lady Raiders the lead.
Kuntzmann struck for her first goal of the game in the 16th minute to extend Shippensburg's lead. It was the fifth game-winning goal of the season for the junior forward, who extended the Lady Raider lead to three just eight minutes later on her 14th goal of the season.
With one game remaining, Kuntzmann is four goals behind Lisa Trombetta '01 for the most goals scored in a season. Trombetta scored 18 as a freshman in the 1997 season. Kuntzmann is now tied for second in school history with Sara Kane-Grimes '01 for career goals, having totaled 35.
Long made nine saves to earn her 11th victory of the season. The senior goalkeeper has now made 103 saves this season and posted a 0.93 goals-against average. For her career, Long has compiled 371 saves, a total that is 17 saves behind the school record of Meredith Yakscoe-Markle '05.
Shippensburg will close out its regular season on Saturday at West Chester. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
