SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Shippensburg women's soccer sophomore
Alison Dowdrick netted her fourth goal of the season and her first career game-winner while senior goalkeeper
Beth Long recorded her conference-leading eighth shutout of the season to propel the Lady Raiders to a 2-0 victory over the Fighting Scots of Edinboro in a PSAC crossover contest on Friday at David See Field.
Shippensburg (9-4) did not record a multitude of opportunities but capitalized on a couple of quality scoring chances. Dowdrick's goal came in the 23rd minute off a spectacular through ball from freshman
Cassie Armold. Less than 90 seconds later, junior forward
Gayle Kuntzmann scored her eighth goal of the season by hammering in a touch from sophomore
Amanda Greenawalt.
Edinboro (4-6-1) had plenty of chances but were kept off the scoreboard due to some solid Shippensburg defense and some simply splendid goaltending from Long. She made a spectacular diving save against Jamie Warren in the first half and also stopped a point-blank shot from Jessica Rexroat in the second half by deflecting it over the crossbar.
Long made four saves for the shutout and has improved her save percentage to .870. With seven games left in the regular season, Long has posted 17 career shutouts through two-plus seasons as the Shippensburg goalkeeper. The school record is still held by Lady Raider great Meredith Yakscoe-Markle '06, who compiled 388 saves and 23 career shutouts from 2002-05.
Shippensburg will head out on the road for two crucial PSAC Eastern Division contests next week with Kutztown and East Stroudsburg. The Lady Raiders take on the Golden Bears this Tuesday at 2 p.m.
