CLARION, Pa. - Despite the fifth consecutive double-double from sophomore forward Lauren Beckley and a career-high 20 points from freshman Kasey Gardne, the Shippensburg women's basketball team could not hold off a feverish comeback by the Clarion Lady Eagles, falling 72-58 on Saturday afternoon inside Tippin Gymnasium.
Shippensburg (14-5, 2-2 PSAC West) led by nine points at halftime, 37-28, after Gardner and Beckley combined for 30 points over the first 20 minutes of play. Beckley finished the game with 18 points and 15 rebounds, while Gardner added 20 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Clarion (12-6, 2-2 PSAC West) ended a two-game losing streak to the Lady Raiders and has now won four of the last six meetings with Shippensburg. A key to their victory was the team's shooting in the second-half, as the Lady Eagles shot 53.6 percent over the final 20 minutes compared to just 25.0 percent for the Lady Raiders.
Shippensburg led by one point, 45-44, with 11:23 remaining in regulation. The Golden Eagles gained offensive momentum over the final 10 minutes, however, closing the game on a 28-13 run to earn the victory.
A significant difference in the contest came at the free-throw line, as Shippensburg was held without a free-throw attempt in the second half, converting 6-of-8 attempts for the game. The Lady Eagles, meanwhile, made 12-of-14 free throw attempts in the second half and finished the game 22-of-26 from the charity stripe.
In addition to Beckley and Gardner, senior guard Megan Fogle delivered 11 points while playing just 30 minutes due to foul trouble and totaled two assists and two steals.
Four Lady Eagles posted double figures, led by 18 points from Sara Pratt. Jessica Albanese posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while My'Kea Cohill and Katrina Greer combined for 31 points.
