BUCKHANNON, W. Va. - Led by a game-high 27 points and career-high 18 rebounds from freshman forward Lauren Beckley (Fairfield/Fairfield), the Shippensburg women's basketball team built a nine-point halftime lead en route to a 77-68 road victory at West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday at Rockefeller Center.
The Lady Raiders (4-4) also received a season-high 19 points from junior guard Megan Fogle (Wrightsville/Eastern York) on 6-of-10 shooting, including four three-pointers. As a team, Shippensburg made 12 three-pointers, marking the most since the team made 12 in a 99-58 victory over Mercy on Nov. 19, 2005. The team also held a 53-39 edge in rebounds.
In her first return to West Virginia Wesleyan since transferring following the 2003-04 season, Lady Raider senior guard Samantha Ramus (New Cumberland/Trinity) played the entire 40 minutes and totaled eight points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. Through eight games this season, Ramus is averaging 6.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists.
With the score tied at 8-8, Fogle hit a three-pointer with 13:41 remaining in the first half to give Shippensburg a three-point lead that it would never relinquish, despite runs by the Lady Bobcats that cut the Lady Raiders' lead to two twice and three, 60-57 with 6:18 left in the second half.
Following a jumper by the Lady Bobcats' Brandi Wynn that cut the deficit to two, 25-23 with 4:01 to play in the first half, Shippensburg closed the half with a 10-3 run to take a 37-28 lead at halftime.
Beckley nearly totaled a double double in the first half, totaling 10 points and nine rebounds while Fogle added 11 points, nine of which came on three-pointers as the Lady Raiders hit seven in the first half. Beckley's double double was the second of career and came almost two weeks after she totaled 29 points and 15 rebounds in an 85-71 victory over Charleston (WV) on November 26.
With 27 points on Saturday, Beckley has now scored 24 or more in the last five-straight contests, averaging 27.6 points and 10.4 rebounds during that time.
In making her third start of the season, sophomore guard Phylicia Bessick (Columbia/Hempfield) scored 11 points, all of which came in the second half as she scored in double figures for the first time this season. Bessick was 2-of-5 from three-point range and combined with Beckley, Fogle and Ramus, who was also 2-for-5, the four combined to make 12-of-27 attempts from behind the arc.
Shippensburg will look for its first back-to-back wins since Jan. 15, 2005 when it hosts Bloomsburg at Heiges Field House following a 10-day layoff on Tuesday, December 19.
