SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Sophomore Daziah Miller recorded his second double-double of the season and red-shirt junior Ryan Kraft tied a career-high set last week with six three-pointers as the Shippensburg men's basketball team outlasted Chestnut Hill, 82-66 on Tuesday evening at Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (3-4) totaled its largest offensive output in its last 25 games, since the Red Raiders totaled 95 points in a victory over Mansfield on December 20, 2006. Three Red Raiders totaled double figures in scoring on Tuesday night, led by 23 points and 10 rebounds from Miller in just 22 minutes of action. It is the sixth time in seven games this season that Miller has scored in double figures.
The Red Raiders dominated the post, totaling 40 points in the paint while out-rebounding the visiting Griffins by a 57-27 margin. Junior Tariek Belcher, who was named PSAC Western Division Player of the Week earlier in the day, narrowly missed a double-double by totaling 15 points and nine rebounds.
Red-shirt sophomore #Derrick Graff# added eight points and 10 rebounds.
Chestnut Hill (0-4) competing in its first season at the Division II level, employed a fast-paced, shoot-first approach that was primarily thwarted by the Shippensburg defense. The Griffins shot just 23.5 percent from the field in the first half yet committed only four turnovers over the first 20 minutes of play.
The Red Raiders never trailed in the contest and built a lead of 25 points midway through the second half. Chestnut Hill trailed by just six points after draining a three-pointer to begin the second half, but Shippensburg responded with a 22-3 run over the next seven minutes to clinch the victory.
Kraft delivered 11 of his 20 points in the first half, converting all three of his three-point attempts in the opening 20 minutes. Over the last three games, Kraft has connected for 13 three-pointers and totaled 47 points over that span.
Julian McFadden, Brandon Williams and Kevin Whaley each contributed 16 points for Chestnut Hill, who nearly converted as many three-pointers (10) as two-point field goals (11).
Shippensburg will play its fourth home game in six days on Thursday when the Red Raiders host Shenandoah University at 7:00 p.m. from Heiges Field House.
