SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Led by sophomores Brian Taylor and Zak Clifford who each totaled three first-place finishes, the Shippensburg University men's swimming team posted a 139-120 victory over Clarion on Saturday at Donald N. Miller Pool inside Heiges Field House.
As a team, the Red Raiders (2-1, 1-1 PSAC) posted seven first place finishes for a total of 65 points while sweeping the top three places in the 200-yard butterfly.
The win was instrumental in Shippensburg's quest for its first PSAC championship since 1993 as the Golden Eagles placed second at last year's conference championship meet held at Cumberland Valley High School.
Taylor captured first in the 200 fly and the 100 fly while Clifford took first in the 100-yard backstroke and 200 back. The duo also teammed with juniors Gabe Oropollo and John Miller to win the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:37.72, 0.21 seconds ahead of Clarion's 'A' team.
Sophomore Shane Wolter was a two-time winner on Saturday, taking first in the 1,000-yard freestyle by almost six seconds before posting the top time in the 500 free.
In the 200 fly, freshman Alan Snyder placed second behind Taylor while junior Kevin Riley placed third.
Miller was the top Red Raider finisher in the 200 free, placing second while taking second in the 200-yard breaststroke. Oropollo was second in the 100-yard breaststroke and Wolter took second in the 400-yard IM.
Shippensburg will now have a 13-day layoff before returning to action at the Patriot Invitational November 16-18 at George Mason University.
