CALIFORNIA, Pa. - California (Pa.) forced 33 turnovers, including eight in overtime as the Vulcans edged out a 62-58 victory over Shippensburg in a key PSAC Western Division women's basketball contest Wednesday night at Hamer Hall. The loss ended a six-game winning streak for the Lady Raiders and was their first since December 30.
The Vulcans (12-5, 2-1 PSAC West) scored 27 points off of Shippensburg's 33 turnovers and were led by Kim Nowakowski and Bre Dillon who scored 23 and 18 points, respectively.
The lead changed hands 15 times and neither team led by more than seven points over the course of tonight's game and following two free throws by Lady Raider freshman forward Lauren Beckley (Fairfield/Fairfield) with 3:37 remaining in overtime, the game was tied for the 11th time at 58-58.
However, those would be the last two points of the game for Shippensburg (13-6, 3-1 PSAC West) as it committed six turnovers on its final six possessions in the final 3:07. Meanwhile, the Vulcans did not fair much better, hitting just 1-of-4 attempts from the floor during that time with three turnovers.
But in the end, it was the defense by California (Pa.) that proved to be the difference as it totaled five steals and scored all eight of its points in overtime of eight Shippensburg turnovers.
Following a Lady Raider turnover with 1:31 left in overtime, the Vulcans' Dani Mills scored on a jumper in the paint to give California (Pa.) a 60-58 lead with 1:10 remaining, but each team would committ a turnover on its next possessions, giving Shippensburg a second attempt to tie the game with 22 seconds to play after an offensive foul by Nowakowski.
Nevertheless, out of a timeout to set up an offensive play, the Lady Raiders turned the ball over for the seventh time in the extra period, before Nowakowski hit two free throws with 11 seconds left, sealing the victory for the Vulcans.
Despite the miscues, Shippensburg remained close, trailing by only three at halftime, 25-22, before eventually taking a 36-36 lead on a lay-up from senior Shanna Oaddams (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) with just under 14 minutes remaining.
The two teams exhanged leads eight times in the final 14 minutes of regulation. With 1:35 remaining, junior guard Megan Fogle (Wrightsville/Eastern York) gave the Lady Raiders a 54-51 with a three-pointer, but California (Pa.) answered back with a three-point play by Mills, tying the game with 1:06 left.
However, Shippensburg would miss on its two shot attempts in the final 53 seconds to win the game in regulation, but did manage to hold the Vulcans without a shot attempt on its final possession with four seconds left to send the game into overtime tied at 54-54.
Red-shirt freshman forward Jenny Cunningham (McVeytown, Pa./Lewistown) led Shippensburg with a team-high 15 points and a game and career-high eight rebounds. She also added four assists and four steals while Oaddams added 12 points and sophomore guard Phylicia Bessick (Columbia/Hempfield) chipped in 10.
Beckley, who entered the game leading the PSAC in scoring at 20.2 points per game, was held to six points, marking the first time in her 19-game career that she did not reach double figures.
The Lady Raiders will look to rebound on Saturday when they host Slippery Rock at Heiges Field House at 1:00 p.m.
All fans are encouraged to wear pink in an effort to pomote the fight against breast cancer and the first 250 fans in attendance will receive a pink ribbon lapel pin as part of the team's partnership with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) in its "Think Pink" initiative.
