SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Looking for redemption after last night's season-opening loss, the Shippensburg University women's basketball team came out with a dominant first half and eventually held on to defeat Assumption College 65-60 in the consolation game of the Wolf's Bus Lines Tournament at Heiges Field House Saturday night.

The Lady Raiders were again led by all-tournament selection freshman Lauren Beckley (Fairfield, Pa./Fairfield), who picked up 19 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and three steals, all the while shooting 4-for-7 from three-point range.

After an 0-for-11 opener, junior guard Megan Fogle (Wrightsville, Pa./Eastern York) went 5-of-11 from the field and 6-of-6 at the free-throw line on her way to 19 points. Oaddams picked up 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Beckley added 13 points, including three from behind the arc, and four rebounds. Senior all-tournament selection

Shanna Oaddams (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds, while senior guard Samantha Ramus (New Cumberland, Pa./Trinity) had a career-high eight rebounds.

Shippensburg jumped out to a 19-3 lead through the first ten minutes of play, with nine of those points coming on treys. Assumption's Charde Floyd, who led the Greyhounds with 15 points and 13 rebounds, reeled off three consecutive layups to cut the lead to 19-9, but that remained the closest that Assumption would come during the first half. The Lady Raiders would lead 32-16 with four minutes remaining, and at the half the lead was 39-27.

For the half the Lady Raiders shot 16-of-35, a drastic improvement over Friday's 6-of-21 first half. After the basket by freshman, Shippensburg would not hit another basket until a three-point shot by sophomore Phylicia Bessick (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield) at 9:20, three of her nine points on the evening. Meanwhile, the Lady Knights only managed eight points themselves during that span. At the half, the Lady Raiders trailed 24-20.

The Greyhounds would come within six as Shippensburg missed four of their first five to start the second half. A layup by freshman Kendra Lehman (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) followed by a three from Beckley allowed the Lady Raiders to maintain their lead. However, Assumption would capitalize on a couple of late fast-break baskets to come within 57-54 with 3:08 to play, but Shippensburg would dominate the boards and convert all six free throw attempts in the final minute to hold on to the victory.

The Lady Raiders improved their shooting in this contest, hitting 42.6 percent of their shots from the floor, including 40.9 percent from behind the arc. Shippensburg also committed 20 turnovers, while forcing the Greyhounds into 20 turnovers themselves.

In the championship game, Bowie State University defeated St. Andrew's Presbyterian, 52-45 to win the tournament. The Lady Raiders will travel to Sheperd Tuesday, Nov. 21. Tip off will be at 6 p.m.
