SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior center Shanna Oaddams (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) and freshman forward Lauren Beckley (Fairfield/Fairfield) combined for 65 points and 29 rebounds as both posted double doubles in an 85-71 victory over Charleston (WV) on Sunday afternoon at Heiges Field House.
Both Oaddams and Beckley totaled career-highs in points with 36 and 29, respectively, while Beckley had a game and career-high 15 rebounds. Oaddams also added 14 boards to help the Lady Raiders (2-2) hold a commanding 51-36 edge in rebounds, just five days after they were out-rebounded 53-35 in a 74-63 loss at Shepherd.
Through four games this season, Oaddams and Beckley are ranked first and second on the team in scoring, averaging 18.8 and 18.0 points per game respectively.
Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles (1-3), the two-time defending NCAA East Region champions who finished 31-3 a year ago and were ranked at No. 6 in the final coaches' poll, were led by 19 points from Emily Jones.
In addition to the offensive success of Oaddams and Beckley, Shippensburg relied on its defense to open an 11-point halftime lead after it held Charleston to just 31.3-percent shooting in the first half while forcing 13 turnovers.
With the score tied at 25-25 with 6:00 left in the opening half, the Lady Raiders ended the half on a 13-2 run to lead 38-27 at the break after they held the Golden Eagles without a field goal for 5:59 until Jones scored on a fast break lay-up in transition with one second left.
Shippensburg would extend the lead to 16 with 16:40 to play in the second half, its largest of the game, before Charleston went on an ensuing 21-7 run to pull back within two, 55-53 with 8:14 remaining.
However, Oaddams and Beckley combined to score the next 23 points for the Lady Raiders, including 18 from Oaddams, as they built their lead back to 10, 78-68 with 1:41 left to play. The duo of Oaddams and Beckley combined to score 39 of Shippensburg's 47 second half points.
Senior guard Samantha Ramus (New Cumberland/Trinity) and junior guard Megan Fogle (Wrightsville/Eastern York) had strong all-around games for the Lady Raiders as Ramus totaled eight points, five rebounds and four assists while Fogle had seven points, five rebounds and four assists.
For the Golden Eagles, Courtney Thomas and Rachel Pike also scored in double figures with 16 and 12 points, respectively. Pike also added a team-high eight rebounds.
Shippensburg will play its third consecutive opponent from the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) on Wednesday when it travels to Pittsburgh-Johnstown. Game time in the Sports Center is at 7:30 p.m. Shippensburg has not won at UPJ since Nov. 29, 2000 after losses in 2004 and 2003.
The next home game for the Lady Raiders is not until Tuesday, December 19 when they host Bloomsburg in a PSAC crossover game.
