The Shippensburg University football team will be on the road for the final two games of the regular season, beginning Saturday at Bloomsburg. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. from Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium.
Series History
• Shippensburg holds a 45-34-1 lead in the series. Bloomsburg, however, holds a 22-17 edge in home games in the series.
• SU has lost the last two meetings but had won three-in-a-row over the Huskies prior to that — including a 34-18 triumph at Bloomsburg under the lights on national television in 2013. The Red Raiders won twice at home in 2012 — with one game deciding the PSAC East crown in a clash of unbeaten teams and another occurring in the NCAA Tournament First Round.
• From 2012-14, Bloomsburg posted a 31-6 overall record, with three of those six losses at the hands of the Red Raiders.
Last Week
• Shippensburg was thwarted in its bid for an Eastern Division title, as visiting Kutztown blocked a potential game-winning field goal on the final play of regulation and later kicked its first field goal of the season to defeat the Red Raiders in double overtime, 24-21. SU managed four interceptions and got a career-high 17 tackles from
Allen Holman — the most by a Red Raider since 2005 — while defensive back Kevin Taylor was named the PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week after a pair of interceptions (including one pick-six).
• Bloomsburg allowed 19 points in a 7:20 span of the second half and suffered a 26-18 loss at Lock Haven on Saturday. Lock Haven outgained Bloomsburg, 439-345, and held the ball for 33:33, marking the sixth time in nine games this season that Bloomsburg did not won the time of possession battle.
Stopping the Run
• SU slipped from second to 12th in NCAA Division II in rushing defense but is still holding opponents to less than 100 yards per game (91.2). Six of SU's nine opponents have rushed for less than 90 yards against the Red Raiders this season.
Bringing the Defense
• Shippensburg ranks 11th in the country for scoring defense — allowing just 16.0 points per game. SU has been able to limit opponents to 144 points through nine games.
• SU has yielded just 135 first downs through eight games (15.0), a total that ranks 13th in the country.
• SU has also scored four defensive touchdowns this season — a total that ranks seventh in Division II.
Stopping Teams in the Red Zone
• Shippensburg's red-zone defense is the best in the PSAC (.640), and ranks 12th in the country.
• The Red Raiders have stopped their opponents from scoring on 18-of-50 red-zone attempts.
• Additionally, Red Raider opponents have scored touchdowns on just 24-of-50 red-zone attempts.
Positive Turnover Margin
• After leading NCAA Division II in turnover margin last season (+20), Shippensburg was not able to force a turnover through the first two games of 2016.
• SU has been able to flip the script over the last seven games, however, and sits with a +10 turnover margin (18 takeaways, 8 giveaways) that ranks 14th in D-II.
• Shippensburg and Albany State lead the country in having lost just one fumble this season.
• Shippensburg's eight giveaways are just one behind IUP for the fewest in the PSAC and that total ranks seventh in Division II.
