ALLENDALE, Mich. – Sophomore
Sarah Hunt notched All-America Second Team honors in the long jump Thursday and senior
Bri Fells qualified for the finals of the 400 meters in representing the Shippensburg University women's outdoor track & field team in the first day of the 2015 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships being held at Grand Valley State University.
Hunt posted a top mark of 19 feet, 2 ¾ inches (5.86 meters), which achieved on her third and final jump. She finished sixth among those competing in the first flight.
Originally, Hunt was scheduled to be the first jumper of the first flight but the order was slightly tweaked to accommodate those also competing in the heptathlon. Her first jump was 18 feet, 7 ¼ inches (5.67 meters) and she fouled on her second attempt.
Fells finished fourth in her 400-meter heat but had the eighth-fastest time of the preliminary competition, running 55.39 seconds. The time is just two-tenths of a second off her PR (55.19) set at the PSAC Championships that allowed her to qualify for her debut NCAA meet. It also marked an improvement of 10 spots, as Fells qualified as the No. 18 seed.
The SU women do not compete Friday. On Saturday, freshman
Crystal Hartman will throw the javelin, Hunt will compete in the triple jump and Fells will run in the 400-meter finals. Fells will be vying to become the first women's 400-meter All-American in school history.
