MEN’s DAY 1: Chapman and Sutton With All-America Finishes; Bologa, Gelston Reach Finals

Chapman repeats as First Team All-America in long jump; Sutton takes 11th in 10K

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Senior LeQuan Chapman earned All-America honors in the long jump for the second straight year on Thursday to highlight a group of four from the Shippensburg University men's outdoor track & field team who competed at the 2015 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Grand Valley State University.

Chapman placed fifth, his best finish at an NCAA Championships to date. He becomes the first two-time All-American in school history for the long jump and just the third overall (Herman Kirkland was third in 2012.)

On his second attempt, Chapman landed a lifetime-best mark of 24 feet, 8 ¼ inches (7.52m). Overall, Chapman landed four successful jumps, including a leap of 24 feet, 5 ½ inches (7.45m) on his fourth attempt, and sat as high as third place at one point during the event.

To date, Chapman is now a five-time All-America First Team performer – including four times in the long jump. He finished sixth outdoors a year ago and has also placed eighth (2013) and seventh (2015) indoors. Chapman was a 2014 indoor All-American in the triple jump, placing sixth, and a 2015 indoor Second Team All-American in the triple jump, placing 11th.

In the final event of the first day, sophomore Kieran Sutton placed 11th in the 10K by running 30:26.02. Sutton claimed All-America Second Team accolades for his run despite being among the back of the pack for the overwhelming majority of the race. With about 1,500 meters remaining in the race, Sutton made up several places to achieve his 11th-place finish.

Two men successfully qualified for the finals of their respective events after strong preliminary runs.

In the 400-meter hurdles, senior Eric Bologa won the second heat in 52.52 seconds to qualify in fifth position. Bologa ran well despite being in an outside lane (8) and no runner at his right to gauge position.

Shortly before Bologa's run, senior Peter Gelston was on the track for the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Gelston was one of five harriers that finished within .17 seconds of each other in the first heat; he ultimately took third from that group and was eighth among qualifiers by running 9:04.78.

On Friday, Chapman will compete in the triple jump while Ryan Hart will throw the discus. Gelston will run in the steeplechase finals and Bologa will join his teammates on the 4x4 relay in its preliminary run.
