LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Senior
Kristina Taylor was named the PSAC Western Division Field Hockey Player of the Year for the third consecutive season and head coach
Bertie Landes earned her third straight PSAC Western Division Coach of the Year award on Wednesday morning as seven members of the Shippensburg University field hockey team earned All-PSAC Western Division citations.
Taylor, one of five Shippensburg student-athletes to be named to the All-PSAC Western Division First Team squad, is believed to be the first field hockey athlete in conference history to be named Player of the Year three times. She received her fourth consecutive selection to the All-PSAC Western Division First Team squad and is Shippensburg's first four-time All-PSAC player since Melissa Nash (1991-94).
As a senior, Taylor leads Division II with 23 goals and also has eight assists for 54 total points – which ranks her third in the country for points per game. She has scored in 13 of the team's 20 games, including multiple goals in seven contests and game-winners in five. Her 23 goals is one short of her single-season career high of 24 set as a sophomore in 2009.
For her career, Taylor has totaled 80 goals and 26 assists for 186 points. She is the active NCAA Division II leader and among the Top 10 players in NCAA Division II history for both categories.
Junior midfielder
Taylor Jones earned her second consecutive All-PSAC Western Division First Team honor after scoring eight goals this season and ranking second on the team with 10 assists. She has provided at least one point in 10 of the team's 20 games. Jones, a first-team All-American last season, scored SU's lone goal in the PSAC Championship game and has three game-winners this season. Her presence in the midfield has been paramount to the team's success, both on offense and defense.
Junior
Jamie Levy was also honored for her work in the midfield with her first career All-PSAC designation as a first team pick. Levy has been extraordinary with her passing and stick skills this season, helping win possession for the Raiders on the offensive end. She is one of seven players to start all 20 games and has tallied two goals and four assists. Among those strikes was the game-winning tally in the PSAC semifinals against C.W. Post.
Sophomore defender
Katie Shoop has solidified the center back position for the Raiders and earns her first All-PSAC West First Team honor after a selection to the Second Team a year ago. Shoop is a defensive force in the middle of the field and forces turnovers on a regular basis. She has also chipped in with five assists this season, tying her career high that was set as a freshman.
Despite Shippensburg having one of its best defensive seasons to date in allowing just 16 goals through 20 games, Shoop was the only defender honored by the league's coaches.
Sophomore forward
Bre White, who ranks second in the nation for points per game (), earned her second straight All-PSAC First Team designation. White has scored 19 goals in 18 games and recorded 15 assists, a tally that is just two short of the single-season school record. It is the second consecutive season that White has posted double digits in both goals and assists. In 16 of her 18 games played this season, White has contributed at least one point – including a streak of 14 consecutive games with one point.
Senior forward
Katie Pufnock and junior goalkeeper
Ciarra Delost were chosen to the All-PSAC Western Division Second Team.
Pufnock earns her second consecutive All-PSAC Western Division Second Team selection after establishing a new career high with 13 goals to go along with five assists. In addition to starting all 20 games, Pufnock has scored three game-winning goals. She began the year on a blistering pace, scoring nine goals and recording four assists in the first seven games of the season.
Delost, an All-PSAC Western Division First Team pick a year ago, had made 15 starts in goal and ranks second in Division II for goals-against average. She has made 30 saves this season, posting an 11-3 record. Delost has allowed just 10 goals in over 850 minutes of work between the pipes.
Landes, a 2011 selection to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Hall of Fame, guided the Raiders to their third consecutive PSAC Western Division championship and its 11th consecutive appearance in the PSAC tournament. SU maintains an active 28-game winning streak against PSAC West opponents that dates back to October 8, 2008.
Since being shifted to the PSAC Western Division at the start of the 2008 season, SU has outscored its opponents by a 128-22 margin while recording 16 shutouts. During the winning streak, SU's scoring margin against PSAC West opponents is 109-16. Shippensburg has only allowed multiple goals three times during its active Western Division winning streak.
Notes: Kristina Taylor is the first four-time All-PSAC First Team pick since Bloomsburg's Jamie Vanartsdalen (2005-08)…she is one of just five PSAC athletes to receive four All-PSAC First Team designations since 1999, joining Bloomsburg's Sharla Parlton (2001-04, midfield), Mansfield's Gretchen Reschke (1999-02, midfield) and IUP's Julie Hess (1999-02, forward)…Nash competed at a time when there was just one All-PSAC squad (no first or second teams)… SU has had the PSAC Western Division Player of the Year in all four seasons since the conference shifted into a divisional format, with Taylor winning the award three times and Kim Davies receiving it in 2008.
