Billy Herman joins the Red Raider baseball coaching staff after a successful playing career at Slippery Rock University in which he missed just five games in four years and made 202 career starts. He graduated in May of 2009 with a degree in health and physical education.
Herman started all four years for The Rock and manned the hot corner as a team captain during his senior season. He earned three All-PSAC awards during his career, including a First Team selection in 2008. Herman began his collegiate career as a second baseman before playing third base during his final three seasons.
As a junior, Herman finished the season with a .337 batting average and ranked second in the PSAC with eight sacrifice bunts. He also received a Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association “Golden Glove Award” as the top defensive third baseman in the North Atlantic Region.
For his career, Herman was a consistent producer both offensively and defensively. He hit .300 or better and had at least 75 total bases in all four of his seasons with Slippery Rock, posting a career batting average of .321. He compiled 115 RBIs, scored 160 runs and had 28 sacrifices.
Perhaps his most impressive feat was his plate discipline. Herman struck out just 62 times as a collegiate baseball player over the course of 705 at-bats, including a miniscule 18 punchouts during his final two seasons as a hitter in which he started every game.
During the summer of 2008, Herman played for the Brockport Riverbats in the New York Collegiate Baseball League, compiling 16 RBIs and 20 runs.
