SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - For the second time in her still-growing career, Shippensburg women's track and field junior
Mary Dell has been awarded a PSAC Top 10 award based on her outstanding academic achievements and illustrious athletic prowess.
On Wednesday, Dell was christened as one of five Spring award winners along with fellow track athlete Priscilla Jennings of Millersville, Clarion's Kassie Leuschel, ESU's Kristen Morby and California (Pa.)'s Sonia Petrosoniak. In April, Dell received a PSAC Winter Top 10 award and was also named the Shippensburg University Women's Student-Athlete of the Year.
Dell is the only Shippensburg athlete that has been a national All-American for each of the last four consecutive calendar seasons. Beginning with her eighth-place finish in the 1,600-meter relay at last year's outdoor track national championships, Dell has continued her streak with All-American performances in cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field.
During the outdoor season, Dell placed sixth at the 2009 NCAA National Championships in the 1,500-meter run after recording three all-conference performances (2nd, 800-meters; 3rd, 1,500-meters; 3rd, 3,000-meters) at the 2009 PSAC Championships. Dell also posted three all-conference performances during the indoor season and was the conference champion in the 800-meters.
Additionally, Dell was an integral member of the team's indoor distance medley relay squad that broke the meet record and won a national championship. In cross country, Dell placed 33rd at the national championship meet after earning all-conference (11th place) and all-region (10th place) honors during the postseason.
This past week, Dell joined sophomore teammate
Erica Hess as a member of the 2008-09 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Women's Track and Field/Cross Country squads for the College Division of District 2. Dell was a First Team selection and advanced to the national ballot.
Academically, Dell has been named to the 2007 and 2008 U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Women's Division II All-Academic Track and Field Team. In cross country, Dell was named to the 2008 USTFCCCA All-Academic Squad and was a part of a Shippensburg squad that was a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team. She is currently a member of the honors program and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes on campus.
For each of the three athletic seasons, each PSAC member institution nominates two male and two female representatives based on their academic success as well as their athletic success for their particular sport. After voting is conducted by the league's sports information directors, a total of five male and female winners are selected. The spring season includes the sports of track and field, baseball, softball, lacrosse, golf and tennis.
The PSAC Top 10 Awards are in their 12th season of existence, having been initiated in the 1997-98 academic year. To be a candidate for the PSAC Top 10 Awards, a student-athlete must have achieved a minimum of a 3.25 cumulative grade point average and must be a starter or key reserve with legitimate athletic credentials for their respective team.
All Top 10 Award winners from the entire academic year are eligible for the PSAC Pete Nevins Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards, given to one male and one female candidate at the end of the academic year.
