ASU's Day 3 Recap
SAN ANGELO, Texas - Shippensburg University freshman
Neely Spence became the first women's outdoor national champion in school history by winning the 5,000-meters during the third and final day of competition from the 2009 Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Angelo State University.
Spence's time was 16:35.36, 14 seconds faster than the rest of the field. Her performance trimmed three seconds off her previous school record that she set in April at the Bison Outdoor Classic. Entering the 2009 outdoor season, the previous school record was 17:01.66, an effort recorded 11 years ago by Steph Yingling.
The only other women's track and field national champion in school history is Kathleen Stec, who won the 3,000-meters at the 1988 indoor track and field championships. Spence is the first women's outdoor All-American for Shippensburg in the 5,000-meters since Emily Budnyk placed fifth in 1999.
Her performance was the main highlight of a banner day for the women's track and field program, which concluded the tournament with three All-American performances for just the third time in school history and the first since 1997. That year, Yingling and Budnyk combined for three All-American awards in distance events.
In other action on Saturday, junior
Mary Dell also achieved All-America status in the 1,500-meter run by finishing in sixth place with a time of 4:33.38. Her personal record in the event was 4:30.58, an effort recorded in early April at the Bison Outdoor Classic. Sophomore
Abby Huber finished 12th in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:45.99.
Last, but most certainly not least, the 1,600-meter relay squad of sophomore
Laura Henzy, junior
Shannon Hare, freshman
Katie Craven and sophomore
Erica Hess recorded an All-American certificate for the second consecutive year with an eighth-place finish in 3:48.57.
Overall, Shippensburg placed 17th at the national championships with a total of 14 points. The men's squad placed 28th with eight points. Shippensburg tied its record of six combined All-American performances at the outdoor national championships, a feat that the men's and women's squads also achieved in 1988 and 1997.
