AKRON, Ohio - Junior Amy Fisher broke a five-year-old school record in the mile on Sunday and posted an automatic qualifier for the NCAA National Championships as the Shippensburg University women's swimming team finished in eighth place after the third and final day of competition from the 2009 Zippy Invitational, hosted by the University of Akron at the Ocasek Natatorium.

Fisher, competing in the event for the first time this season, finished fourth in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:26.39, surpassing current head coach Erin Goodhart's previous school record of 17:29.36 that was set on Mar. 10, 2004. Fisher's time is 27 seconds faster than her fifth-place finish at last year's PSAC Championships, her previous-career best, and surpassed the automatic-qualifying mark by nearly six full seconds.

It was a wonderful highlight for a solid weekend of swimming for Shippensburg. Senior Whitney Garner finished 10th in the 100-yard freestyle with an NCAA 'B' cut time of 52.92 seconds, a new SU season-best. Garner later joined Fisher, sophomore Kristen McCandless and sophomore Nicole Capozzi to post a time of 3:38.62 in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Freshman Julia Brownrigg reached the 'B' group final and finished 11th with a time of 2:07.65, just one second off her school-record time that she achieved two weeks ago at the George Mason Invitational.

Shippensburg will return to action at 5 p.m. on Jan. 15, 2010 with a dual meet at Bloomsburg.
