SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Redshirt senior forward
Daziah Miller led all Red Raider scorers with 24 points on Monday night from Heiges Field House but an overtime rally proved to be too much to overcome for the Shippensburg men's basketball team as visiting Goldey-Beacom earned an 89-80 victory.
Shippensburg (4-1) and Goldey-Beacom (1-1) engaged in a seesaw battle throughout the second half, with the squads combining for 12 lead changes and nine ties in the contest. One of the most important exchanges came with 1:13 to play, when sophomore guard
Craig Van Scyoc drained a three-pointer off an in-bounds play that tied the score at 70-70 following a traveling violation by the Lightning.
On the ensuing possession, Goldey-Beacom missed a jumper and the rebound was grabbed by sophomore
Dane Lauber. After working the clock, freshman guard
Lamar Jackson made a move and converted a layup that gave SU a 72-70 lead with six seconds to play. However, Goldey-Beacom guard Kyle White answered with a layup at the other end with one second left to send the contest into overtime.
Miller, who shot 9-of-14 from the field on the contest and also had seven rebounds, drained a jumper with 3:01 left in overtime to bring Shippensburg within one point. However, the Lightning closed with a 12-4 run to seal the victory. Perhaps the most telling stat for the visitors was the fact that Goldey-Beacom converted 22-of-24 free-throw attempts in the contest, including 7-of-8 in overitme.
White was simply dominant for the Lightning, scoring 28 points to go along with eight assists and six rebounds. He hit several tough shots with defenders in his face and jump-started a Lightning offense that saw four players post double figures. Point guard Azeez Ellegood chipped in 22 points, while forward Terrance Parkes had 17 points and 11 rebounds.
All 10 players for Shippensburg scored at least two points in the contest. Jackson had 11 points and five assists but fouled out early on in overtime, while Lauber had 12 points and Oleksiak had 11 points. The well-disciplined contest featured just 17 combined turnovers between the two teams.
Shippensburg will return to action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Lock Haven.
