AKRON, Ohio - The Shippensburg University men's swimming team opened the three-day Zippy Invitational from the Ocasek Natatorium on the campus of the University of Akron with solid team performances. The men's team is in sixth place after the first day of competition with 250 points.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of senior
Gabe Oropollo, sophomore
Tim Smullen, senior
John Miller and junior
Nate Ryan finished third with a solid time of 1:24.35, just a half-second behind their pace at the Patriot Invitational.
Meanwhile, the 400-yard medley relay team of sophomore
Josh Nyce, Oropollo, senior
Brian Taylor and Miller finished in 3:34.75, earning 11th place.
Individually, Ryan placed third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.25 seconds. He was just 0.12 seconds behind his pace at the Patriot Invitational and once again earned an NCAA 'B' cut.
Drew Hagerich completed the 500-yard freestyle with an eighth-place time of 4:46.17. Freshman
Richard Deley was in the consolation bracket and finished in 11th place with a time of 4:46.67. Junior
Shane Wolter swam the 200-yard IM in 1:58.17 to earn 10th place.
The second day of competition begins at 9 a.m. tomorrow from the Ocasek Natatorium on the campus of the University of Akron.
