A native of Bayonne, New Jersey, Nick Cutro was an All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference running and defensive back who helped Shippensburg win the conference (PSAC) championship in 1957 with a record of 6-0-1. He led the team in rushing with 474 yards on 36 carries and still holds the schools record for most yards per carry with an average of 13.2.

In the Red Raiders 20-13 win over California (Pa.), Cutro gained 154 yards on three carries. He scored on the first play from scrimmage on a 73-yard run and later crossed the goal line with the winning touchdown on a 74-yard jaunt. Cutro broke open the Shepherd game with a 64-yard touchdown run and had one of 66 yards against East Stroudsburg. Cutro was ranked 11th in the nation in rushing and earned honorable mention All-American honors.

Following graduation Cutro was invited to the Philadelphia Eagles camp as a free agent but suffered an injury and was released. He stayed active in football for more than 18 years. He was head coach at Bayonne High School for two years, then was head coach at St. Mary’s High School in Rutherford, New Jersey from 1960 to 1963. His 1960 team went 8-0-1 and was New Jersey state champion; his 1961 team repeated as state champion with an 8-1 mark.

From 1963-1973 he coached and was general manager of several teams in the Atlantic Coast and Seaboard Leagues. In 1972, his Hartford (Conn). Knights won the Seaboard League championship with a 17-0 record and he was named national minor league Coach of the Year.

Cutro was a scout for the New York Jets of the National Football League from 1964 to 1969 and for the Cleveland Browns in 1969. He was assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Bell of the World Football League from 1974 to 1975.

Later, Cutro became president and owner of Boardwalk Enterprises Inc., a restaurant and marina, in Lake George, New York. Before moving there, he was president and owner of Rutherford Sporting Goods in Rutherford, N.J. from 1960 to 1974.
