MAINS SYNOPSIS:
· Three-Time All-PSAC Football Player (’90 [1st], ’91 [2nd], ’92 [1st])
· All-Time Leading Tackler in SU Football History (568)

Michael Shayne Mains was a four-year varsity letterman at linebacker on the Red Raider football team from 1989-1992. He is the leading tackler in school history and has been described by several of his teammates as one of the best defensive players to ever suit up for Shippensburg.

In addition to his record for the most career tackles in school history, Mains holds school records for most solo tackles in one season, most total tackles in one season, most assisted tackles in a career and most interceptions returned for a touchdown. Mains also totaled 40 tackles for loss in his career, which ranks eighth in school history.

As a senior in 1992, Mains was an All-American and re-wrote the record books with 203 tackles, a tally that included 98 solo tackles. He also set a career high with 11 tackles for loss, including two sacks, and also tallied four interceptions. His 17 career interceptions ranks third in school history and ranks him among the Top 20 in PSAC history for the category.

Following his senior season, Mains received the Kevin Mylett award as the football team’s most outstanding defensive player and the Jack Roddick Centurian Award as the football team’s most valuable player following his senior season.

During his junior season in which Shippensburg advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals, Mains had 137 tackles and set a school record for most interceptions by a linebacker with eight. He also had nine tackles for loss and two blocked kicks while earning All-PSAC Second Team honors.

As a sophomore, Mains entered the starting lineup with great success, ranking second on the team in tackles and third in tackles for loss while leading the squad with four fumble recoveries. He had 147 tackles – six for loss – in addition to three interceptions.

Mains was a reserve in his freshman season but still managed to finish fourth on the team in tackles with 81 in addition to four sacks, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. His success resulted in “Rookie of the Year” honors from the football program.

A native of Havre de Grace, Maryland – Mains came to Shippensburg after playing at Fork Union Military Academy in 1988. He is married to wife Noelle, whom he met at Shippensburg in 1993. The couple has two daughters: Hannah and Ashley. The family resides in Glen Mills, where Mains has been a supervisor with Glen Mills Schools for the last 17 years.
