Karen Keffer Sentz of Hanover, Pa., Class of 1990 became the winningest women’s tennis player in Shippensburg history over a four year career spanning from 1987-1990.
As a freshman in 1986, Sentz was an instant success. She was the runner-up at No. 2 singles at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships.
The following season, though, was Sentz’s breakout year. She captured the No. 2 singles championship and teamed with Marci Staherski to claim the No. 2 doubles title.
She continued her winning ways as a junior with a PSAC No. 2 singles championship and a No. 1 doubles crown.
In 1989, Sentz led the Lady Raiders to a 13-1 record conference record and once again made an appearance in the PSAC finals. This time, she was the No. 1 singles runner-up. She posted a 24-11 overall mark that season, was ranked 31st in Division II, and third in the East Region. The tandem of Sentz and Chris Logan won 11 of 14 matches and garnered a national ranking of 18th.
Throughout her career, Sentz made a habit of breaking records. She accumulated 103 career wins, which stands atop the Shippensburg school record books. She also had a hand in setting the record for doubles wins in a season (12) and most consecutive doubles wins (12). Both of those records were broken during her 1987 sophomore season. Sentz also earned the rare honor of being named All-PSAC four times.
Sentz, though, was not all about individual success. Her Shippensburg teams never finished lower than third at the PSAC Championships. And from ’87-’89, the Lady Raiders posted three-straight runner-up finishes.
Sentz graduated with a degree in accounting in 1990. She continued her education at York College and earned her MBA in 1995.
