Bruce Brown, Class of 1974, was a star on the Red Raiders Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship team of 1971. He also helped Shippensburg win shares of PSAC Eastern Division crowns in 1970 and 1972. It marked the first time that the Shippensburg soccer team had compiled four consecutive winning seasons in its history.
A native of Swarthmore, Brown enrolled at Shippensburg in the fall of 1969 after a stellar career at Ridley Township High School. He quickly won the starting nod at midfield for head coach Tony Puglisi and helped the Red Raiders compile a 6-4 record, only its third winning season in eight years.
In 1970, Brown was instrumental in the Red Raiders drive to a 9-2-2 overall record and a share of the PSAC Eastern Division Title.
The following season Shippensburg won the PSAC Eastern Division outright with Brown leading the team in assists with four. That mark tied the school record for assists in a season.
Shippensburg played Lock Haven in the conference championship game, which resulted in a scoreless tie and the teams were declared co-champions of the PSAC. The Red Raiders finished the season with a record of 9-2-3 and Brown was selected to the All-PSAC team.
In 1972, Brown’s senior season, Shippensburg opened its season with a 2-1 win over East Stroudsburg and finished in a tie for the Eastern Division title. The team had an overall record of 6-5. However, at that time the PSAC had a no-repeat rule in case of ties for the conference championship game and East Stroudsburg advanced to the title game, even though Shippensburg had won in head-to-head competition. East Stroudsburg went on to win the PSAC title.
After graduating, Brown lived in Perryville, Ohio and became district sales manager for LaFrance Corporation. He coached in the Perrysville Youth Soccer Program and was active with the First Baptist Church of Perrysburg. Brown remained active in soccer playing with the Perrysburg men’s team in the Over 30- League in the Greater Toledo Metropolitan Soccer League.
