Brady Stauffer of Reading, Class of 1992, was named to the Shippensburg University Athletic Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will take place Friday, September 24, in Reisner Hall and will be part of Shippensburg’s Homecoming festivities.

Stauffer lettered and earned All-America honors four years in a row. At the time of his graduation, he was the most successful swimmer in Shippensburg history, winning six NCAA Division II national championships.

Stauffer led Shippensburg to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships in 1990 and 1991. The Red Raiders were conference runnerup in 1988 and 1989. Stauffer was an All-American all four years of competition. He never lost a backstroke race his last three seasons and those victories included dual meet victories over NCAA Division I swimmers from Penn State, Villanova, Syracuse, Navy, Army and William & Mary. In addition Stauffer was never beaten those three years in medley relay events.

Stauffer arrived at Shippensburg in the fall of 1987 from Shillington and Governor Mifflin High School. He earned All-America honors as a freshman when he placed seventh in the 100 yard backstroke in 52.73. He won his first PSAC and NCAA Division II titles during his sophomore season in the winter of 1989. He won the 100 yard backstroke and the 200 yard backstroke at the national meet with times of 50.80 and 1:51.52, respectively.

The following season Stauffer won those same two events at the conference and nationals again. He had national winning times of 50.43 and 1:52.70.

In 1991, Stauffer became the first NCAA Division II swimmer to crack the 1:50 barrier in the 200 yard backstroke when he took the national title in 1:49.88. He also won the 100 yard backstroke in 50.58. At the time of his graduation, Stauffer held the national record in both events.

Stauffer chose to pursue a career in education. He has taught fifth grade in the Governor Mifflin School District and became the swim coach at Governor Mifflin. He has developed numerous league and district champions and high school All-Americans.
