2013 Game Preview:
SHIP vs. Kutztown (w/Game Notes)
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — The Shippensburg University athletics department is pleased to announce it will hold another "Donate Life" event, as SU will team up with the Gift of Life donor program, the region's organ and tissue transplant network, at the October 19 home football game against Kutztown.
The SU athletics initiative has two main goals – raise awareness for organ donation, and increase the number of people that are willing to become organ donors.
Information tables will be set up at both entrances of Seth Grove Stadium to provide educational information about organ and tissue donation and afford individuals an opportunity to register as a new donor who is willing to spread the gift of life onto others.
This is the second consecutive year that Shippensburg has hosted a "Donate Life" event. Last September, SU partnered with Donate Life Pennsylvania for a week of activities that culminated with a home football game versus Millersville. The coaching staff and sideline personnel wore "Donate Life" t-shirts, while many Red Raider football players boasted lime green shoelaces.
At halftime of last year's event, a video message from Wes Mallicone, SU director of sports medicine, was played to the crowd. Mallicone was the recipient of a life-saving liver transplant just over two years ago.
"When you hear Wes's story, you understand the importance and impact on us to "paying it forward," said Dwendy Johnson, senior coordinator of community relations for the Gift of Life program. "Our partnership with Shippensburg University will help to pay it forward by raising awareness and increasing the opportunity to help save lives. It only takes 30 seconds to register and help save lives."
"Organ donation has become such an important initiative for athletics at Shippensburg University because one of our own was deeply impacted," said Carrie Michaels, Associate Director of Athletics. "We want to provide a forum to increase education and provide opportunities for individuals to become organ donors."
