Sophomore point guard
Reggie Charles of the Shippensburg University men's basketball team was named the PSAC Eastern Division Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday afternoon by the league office after two worthwhile efforts that helped the Raiders to a 2-0 week.
Charles had 10 assists this week (four at Bloomsburg, six vs. Mansfield) while committing just three turnovers over the course of 59 minutes. In the week's first game, a 79-58 victory at Bloomsburg, Charles scored a game-high 17 points that included an 11-of-12 performance at the free-throw line. He also had three assists and two rebounds to help SU snap a long-losing skid in PSAC play.
On Saturday against Mansfield, Charles's stat line was 16 points (6-of-8 shooting, including 1-1 from 3-point range), six assists, three rebounds and two steals with just one turnover. Trailing by one point with less than three minutes remaining, Charles assisted
Akil Anderson on a lay-up that gave the Raiders a one-point lead. On the ensuing possession, Charles grabbed a rebound and went coast-to-coast for a layup that extended SU's lead to three points.
After Mansfield tied the game with a 3-pointer, Charles assisted
Dylan Edgar on a dunk that put SU back in the lead. He would foul out on the next possession. Overall for the week, Charles scored 33 points, shot 9-of-15 from the floor, 14-of-16 from the free-throw line and had five steals.
Through 15 games, Charles is second in the PSAC in assists (69, 4.6), 15th in steals (24, 1.6) and 28th in scoring (12.1). Charles scored a career-high 34 points in a loss at Lock Haven, the most by any Raider since 2007, and has posted double figures in nine games this season.
Shippensburg earned a pair of victories last week to vault itself back into the Eastern Division playoff picture. SU had five players score in double figures in both victories, marking the second and third times this year that the team has accomplished the feat.
The Raiders host West Chester at 8 p.m. Wednesday from Heiges Field House.
